After 30 years, Cafe Carolina and Bakery will close its final Raleigh location on August 31.
The business previously closed its Cary and Chapel Hill locations and, according to the owner, tried several strategies to adapt—including menu changes, relocation and expanding delivery.
But ultimately, the economics no longer worked.
From a CRE perspective, this is a good reminder that a strong history and established customer base don’t necessarily guarantee a sustainable location.
🍽️ Restaurant operators are dealing with changing consumer habits, labor costs, occupancy costs and competition—all of which can affect whether a space makes financial sense.
For building owners, understanding the economics of your tenant matters.
For business owners, the real estate decision is often just as important as the concept itself.
📍 The right location can support a business. The wrong economics can overwhelm it.
