North Carolina regulators have approved air permits for 649 diesel generators tied to Amazon’s massive data center project near Hamlet.
🏗️ Amazon’s permit covers 592 emergency generators, while Duke Energy received approval for 57 temporary generators that will provide power until the site is connected to the grid.
📍 The planned campus is expected to include 21 buildings of roughly 200,000 SF each across nearly 800 acres.
💰 Total investment: about $10 billion.
🔌 Once fully operational, the facility is expected to become Duke Energy’s largest customer.
The scale of these projects is hard to overstate. Data centers are becoming major drivers of land use, infrastructure planning, utility demand, and economic development across North Carolina.
