After Hurricane Helene washed out part of I-40’s eastbound lanes, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is partnering with a contractor to speed reconstruction in the Pigeon River Gorge.
Key moves:
• Temporary on-site concrete plant
• On-site rock crushing
• Fewer material shipments on the interstate
The project is estimated to cost nearly $2 billion, with completion targeted by 2028. Traffic remains one lane each direction with reduced speeds.
Why It Matters
For Property Owners & Investors:
• I-40 is a critical freight corridor
• Extended disruption impacts logistics and industrial users
• Infrastructure resilience affects long-term valuation
For Business Owners:
• Supply chain timing and costs remain sensitive
• Tourism and regional traffic patterns are affected
• Multi-year reconstruction = prolonged operational friction
Major infrastructure events don’t just disrupt roads — they reshape regional economics.
