As development continues across Wake County, some farmers are turning to preservation programs to keep family land in agriculture rather than sell it for development.
A few things stood out:
🏡 One Fuquay-Varina farmer said his family has owned its land for more than 270 years.
💰 He also said prime land with utilities is now drawing figures in the range of $100,000 to $200,000 per acre.
🚜 Farmers say rising land values, operating costs, and generational transitions are making it increasingly difficult to keep farming in Wake County.
🌱 County leaders say preservation programs have protected 407 acres of farmland across several farms.
From a real estate standpoint, this is an interesting tension. Rising land values create tremendous opportunity for owners, but once farmland is developed, that use is generally gone for good.
As Wake County keeps growing, the question is not whether land will become more valuable. It is how communities and property owners decide what should happen with it.
