๐Ÿš† $550 Million More for Raleigh-to-Richmond Passenger Rail

Oct 28, 2026 | News

North Carolina just received another $550 million in federal funding for the S-line passenger rail project connecting Raleigh toward Richmond.

The first phase will focus on Wake County, with plans to extend Amtrakโ€™s Piedmont service from Raleigh Union Station to Wake Forest by 2032.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ NCDOT is already working on bridge projects in Raleigh and Wake Forest to eliminate railroad crossings and prepare the corridor for faster, more frequent passenger trains.

๐Ÿš„ Once the full Raleigh-to-Richmond route is complete, trains are expected to reach speeds of up to 110 mph and cut more than an hour off the current trip.

From a commercial real estate standpoint, projects like this can reshape how people think about access and location over time.

Rail improvements do not just affect commuters. They can influence development patterns, station-area investment, business access, and the value of being connected to a larger regional network.
